we heard about 32, 64 or even 128 gigabyte solid state drives [ssd], but now bitmicro networks is pre-announcing the latest addition to its e-disk altima ssd family, the 832 gigabyte capacity serial ata solid state disk in 2.5” form factor, at the forthcoming ces 2008 in las vegas [open the techcalendar]. it is expected to have sustained read rates of up to 100mb/sec and up to 20,000 i/o operations per second. the device features a sata 3.0 gbps interface.
with no moving parts, a solid state drive largely eliminates seek time, latency and other electro-mechanical delays and failures associated with a conventional hard disk drive.
