16-year-old waterloo collegiate institute student daniel burd developed possibilities for microbial degradation of plastic grocery bags. he was able to demonstrate that the polyethylene can be degraded by bacteria from local soil. he isolated the two organisms responsible for the degradation: sphingomonas and pseudomonas.
