otherfarm visited theo jansen's [ 1 ][ 2 ] open house [3 may 2008] at his windlab in the hague [*1]. theo jansen is known for his kinetic sculptures, called strandbeesten [beach beasts].
*1:

a strandbeest is a beach-walking sculpture made from commonly available tools like plastic tubing and plastic bottles [no electronics], and it converts the wind into compressed air as its energy source.
by using [intelligent] cells, tube systems that control air flow like bits control a computer [off/on - 0/1 - the numbered sets of tubes on the photo below], the behaviour of the construction can be programmed.
this sculpture knows when it reaches the sea or loose sand in the dunes and will turn around, counting its steps. during a storm it will automatically fold its wings [used for harvesting wind] and anchor itself into the ground using a hammer and a stake.
